“Myself” is not a substitute for “me” or “I.”

You’ve probably seen a sentence such as this: “Please
contact Jane Smith, Kate Doe or myself for more information about the
workshop.” The “myself” is incorrect. “Me” is the correct word.

The best way to determine which is right is to delete the
other people in the sentence. You would not say “Please contact myself.” You
would say “Please contact me for more information about the workshop.” So the
sentence should be: “Please contact Jane Smith, Kate Doe or me for more
information about the workshop.”

“Myself” is a reflexive pronoun. Think of it this way: I
look in the mirror and see a reflection of myself.

A reflexive pronoun always is the
object of a sentence; it never can be the subject. A subject is the one doing something in a sentence, and
the object is the one having something done. So if I pet the cat, I am the
subject and the cat is the object. You wouldn’t say “Myself petted the cat,” so
don’t say “Fred and myself petted the cat.”

Word-of-mouth Marketing

Most programs and research projects don’t have funds for
promotion. What to do? Word-of-mouth marketing is one of the strongest and
cheapest forms of marketing you ever will use. It often is
overlooked by large organizations and companies.

Begin with a description of your “customers.” Think about who
they are (age, income, education), what they do and where they are from (ZIP
code, distance from you).

Next, think about how you will reach your customers. Is it
a news release, field sign, meeting, networking?

Think about your appearance on a daily basis, such as eye contact, posture, tone of
voice, handwriting, spelling, thoughtfulness, enthusiasm and energy level.

Reaching
your target audience and thinking about how others perceive you will go a long
way in having people spread the word about your program.

Satisfied
customers may tell three or four people about their positive experience.
Conversely, dissatisfied customers will tell at least nine other potential
customers.

Information about you and your program through word of
mouth is becoming increasingly important as more people bypass the
traditional mass media and rely on Facebook, Twitter and other social media.

If you are conducting an NDSU Extension Service public meeting, do the following:

Wear your official NDSU Extension Service nametag.

If possible, set up a NDSU Extension Service display. (Best if localized, but a general display is available through the Ag Comm. Dept.)

Ag Comm. also has available a portable sign that fits on the front of a podium. However, each county should have one on hand.

Distribute Extension Service brochures that explains what we do. These can be ordered from the Distribution Center. (Ag. Comm.)

Before beginning your program, give a brief “commercial” for the NDSU Extension Service. Include a brief statement of what we do and some of the current and upcoming offerings in your area or the rest of the state. It is an ideal way to tell audiences that we offer other educational programs.

Wear appropriate attire. A suggested rule of thumb is to dress one level above your anticipated audience (See Professionalism: Representing Yourself to Increase Brand Value).

If using PowerPoint, use one of the NDSU Extension Service templates.

When introducing other Extension colleagues, give their name and title.

Additional items to consider:

Collect attendees’ names and addresses or e-mails to be able to market future programs to them and for possible evaluation later

Send a personalized thank-you note to speakers on letterhead or notecard

Have a PowerPoint with the NDSU Extension Service logo and program title on the screen as people arrive
