Proposed Noxious Weed Changes
The ND Ag Commissioner has proposed the removal of Field Bindweed and Yellow Starthistle from the state noxious weed list. He has also proposed adding Yellow Toadflax to the list. Yellow Starthistle had been found in a CRP field in Mountrail County a few years ago but is not believed to be present in the state at this time. Yellow toadflax is an escaped ornamental which is found in at least 9 locations in Burke county. It is snap dragon type yellow flower which was once very common in flower beds throughout the area. It was commonly called “Butter and Eggs”.
It is spreading into road ditchges and noncrop areas throughout the state. It is very difficult to control with herbicides and has the potential to become a cropland weed in reduced tillage systems.
A public hearing regarding the proposed changes will be held at the Seven Seas Hotel in Mandan at 3:00 pm on January 12th, 2010. If you have any comments about the proposed changes please contact me prior to January 11th. You are welcome to attend the hearing in person if you like.
