Check Stored Grain
As stored grain warms with the summer weather moisture can migrate within the grain mass and cause mold and deterioration of stored grain. Moisture from leaks or moisture blown in around access doors and vents can also cause the start of mold or create ideal conditions for insects to get started. Warmer grain temperatures can cause these problems to develop rapidly and spread throughout the grain mass. Regularly checking bins can help producers identify problems before they spread throughout the entire structure. Look for sprouting grain inside access doors and top covers. Probe cone peaks to check for high temperatures and bugs. Check around outside of bins for the presence of bugs on spilled or leaking grain. Look for any sign of moisture leakage along the bottom or sides of bins. Checking bins early on mornings with heavy dew can provide a quick indicator of potential problems if one bin is dry when others are dew covered.
